William Whitfield Crane IV (better known as Whit or Whitfield Crane) was born on January 19, 1968 in Palo Alto, California. Whit was a founding member and lead singer of the rock band Ugly Kid Joe, which formed in 1989 and disbanded in 1997. However, according to the band's Myspace Page Ugly Kid Joe has reformed, with plans to tour in 2010-2011 and possibly write new material.

Following Ugly Kid Joe's demise, Whit went on a year-long tour with New York hard rockers Life of Agony before forming Medication with ex-Machine Head guitarist, Logan Mader. Due to a series of internal issues, Medication disbanded in February 2003.

Over the years, Whit performed guest vocals on several tracks, including Reaching Out by Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray (from the Lynn Strait tribute album Strait Up), Born to Raise Hell by Motorhead (featuring rapper Ice-T) and Voodoo Brother by Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest.

Whit's filmography includes Ellie Parker, where he has a cameo appearance as an acting student, and Motorhead's 25 & Alive: Boneshaker, where he is himself.

In 2006, former Ugly Kid Joe bandmate, Shannon Larkin, asked Whit to be the primary vocalist on a side project he formed with other Godsmack members (minus Sully Erna) called Another Animal. Whit accepted, and the band released its self-titled debut album in 2007. In support of their debut, the band went out on tour, opening for labelmates Alter Bridge. Due to poor record sales, the future of the band is currently unknown.

In 2011, he performed with metal tribute band Hail! in Istanbul, Turkey.
